Kargil is Ladakh's second town, at about 2,676 m on the Suru river where it meets the Wakha Rong. It sits roughly midway on the Srinagar–Leh highway, 204 km from one and 234 km from the other, and for most travellers that is all it has ever been — a lunch stop. Things to do in Kargil reward anyone who stays the night instead: Balti food and language, a working bazaar, and the Munshi Aziz Bhat museum, built out of a Silk Route trading family's own unsold stock.
The Suru valley opens south of town — apricot orchards and barley fields under the Nun and Kun peaks, both over 7,000 m — and the road carries on over Pensi La to Padum in Zanskar. Nearer the border, Hunderman village keeps a small museum of what its displaced residents left behind. The road season decides most of this, so check what's dated rather than what's usually possible.
