Ziro is the district headquarters of Lower Subansiri in Arunachal Pradesh, a flat valley at about 1,688 m ringed by pine hills and farmed by the Apatani. What makes it unusual is underfoot: the terraces are a rice-and-fish system, with fish reared in the flooded paddy and millet grown on the bunds between plots, all fed by hand-built bamboo channels. The valley sits on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list for exactly that.
Things to do in Ziro follow that landscape — walks between the villages and the terraces, and the Ziro Festival of Music, four days of live music on a field at Biiri each September, hosted with the Apatani community. It is around 100 km from the railhead at Naharlagun and about 115 km from Itanagar, so arriving is a half-day drive whichever way you come.
