Palampur is the tea town of the Kangra valley, laid out across a slope with the Dhauladhar wall standing directly behind it. Estates have grown Kangra tea here since the 1850s and the gardens still run to the edge of the bazaar, which is why things to do in Palampur tend to start with a walk through them rather than with a monument. Neugal Khad, a stream gorge about 2 km out, is the standard viewpoint.
Two short drives fill the rest of a day. Baijnath, roughly 16 km on, has a stone Shiva temple that is among the oldest still in daily worship in north India; Andretta, about 13 km the other way, is the artists' village where Norah Richards and Sobha Singh settled and where the pottery studio still takes visitors. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway stops here too, which is a slower way in than the road and the better one.
